Silver-plated tie pin with the University's emblem.

The supercarpenter William Chalmers (1748-1811) had made a major fortune in the Swedish East India Company's trade with China and other countries in the latter part of the 18th century. Influenced by his Masonic brother Pehr Dubb, he bequeathed all his estate to the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg and to the establishment of an industrial school for poor children who had learned to read and write. The "Chalmersska Slöjdskolan", which was inaugurated in Gothenburg on 5 November 1829, became the origin of today's technical college.

The Avancez emblem, together with the logo, forms the university's trademark. The emblem originates from the seal of the donor William Chalmers.

The history of Chalmers has been drawn on several occasions, mainly in connection with anniversaries. In April 1998, 250 years after the birth of William Chalmers, a short retrospective was written right back to the start of the Chalmers School of Handicrafts.
This publication, written by Jan Hult, puts the development at Chalmers in relation to events in the world.
